With the majority of fires in the home originating in the kitchen, fire blankets are an essential safety item to smother a fire caused by burning oil or fat on the stove.
Locate your fire blanket near the entrance/exit to your kitchen. Always read the instructions for your fire blanket before use. You should have an escape route – ensure the fire is not between you and the exit.
Open the fire blanket and hold it in front of you to shield your body, hands and face from the fire. Cover the burning material completely, ensuring there are no gaps for air to reach the fire. Shut off any gas or other fuel supply involved in the fire. Leave the blanket in place for at least 30 minutes to allow the oil or fat to cool.
Fire blankets are only suitable for one use and will need to be replaced after each application.
Fire blankets can also be used in situations where a person’s clothing has caught fire. The fire blanket can be wrapped around the person to smother the flames.
Exelgard fire blankets come in a range of sizes. The 1x1m size is the most commonly used size for domestic use.
